Good morning!
金秋九月，既是收获季，也是开学季。今天我们在这里隆重举行2019—2020学年开学典礼暨表彰大会。首先，我代表全校师生，向新入学的2568名本科生、331名研究生表示热烈欢迎！你们是学校更名大学后的第一批学子，欢迎你们加入吉外这个温暖的大家庭！同时，向今天受到表彰的先进集体和优秀个人表示衷心的祝贺！向辛勤哺育你们成长的各位家长致以崇高的敬意！
In this golden autumn day, we’re gathered here for the opening ceremony and commendation conference of the 2019-2020 school year. First of all, on behalf of all faculty members, I’d like to extend my warm welcome to the 2568 undergraduate students and 331 postgraduate students, my congratulations to all groups and students winning awards, and my high respect to all parents and teachers!
同学们，习近平总书记指出：“大学是立德树人、培养人才的地方，是青年人学习知识、增长才干、放飞梦想的地方。”大学探求高深知识，追求真理，其魅力不仅在于保存与传递知识，更在于生机勃勃的创造和运用知识，以此培养高素质、高层次、高级专门人才，服务社会。大学，教给学生知识与本领，研究事物的态度，科学思维的方法，人生的智慧和完整的人格。大学，教会学生去发现自己、认识自己、选择未来将成为怎样的人，使学生不断激发潜能，为将来服务国家、服务社会、服务人民打好基础，成就梦想！
General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that “University is a place where virtue builds people and talents are trained. It is also a place where young people learn knowledge and realize their dreams.” The charm of universities in seeking advanced knowledge and truth lies not only in preserving and transferring knowledge, but also in cultivating high-quality and high-level specialized talents. Universities are where you can learn knowledge and skills, cultivate research abilities, pursue scientific methods, and become well-rounded individuals so that you can prepare yourselves for serving the country, society and other people and achieving your own dreams.
同学们，走进吉外，首先要了解吉外的创业历史、精神追求和价值取向！吉外是一所创业大学，从无到有，走过了一条艰苦卓绝、负重拼搏的发展道路，实现了一个又一个跨越，创造了一个又一个奇迹，成为了改革开放以来我国高等教育快速发展的见证和缩影；吉外是一所特色鲜明的大学，始终秉承“一切为了学生成人、成才、成功”的办学理念和“以学生为中心、办最负责任教育”的教育理念，坚持以服务国家“一带一路”建设和地方经济社会发展为己任，以培养应用型人才为核心目标，培养了一大批具有家国情怀和国际视野，能够掌握真本领、真技能，深受用人单位欢迎的高素质的外语外事人才；吉外是一所高举公益性旗帜的非营利性大学，她为教育梦想而生，致力于办一所高水平的百年名校。吉外始终坚守选择教育、热爱教育、献身教育的理想信念，成为全国唯一一所捐资办学、探索非营利性办学模式改革试点的民办大学，成为我国非营利性办学的一面旗帜。她来源于社会、回报于社会的公益精神和崇高的教育理念是学校发展的不竭动力；吉外是一所坚持精品办学、走向世界的大学，始终坚持国际化办学，将质量摆在首位，严控规模，不求大而全，但求特和精，坚持发扬“天下大事必从细而做”“严、精、细”的工作作风。生源质量排名始终位居全国本土民办高校之首，成为全国民办高校中唯一一所重点大学，第一所更名为大学、获批硕士学位授予单位和博士立项建设单位的民办大学。教育部审核评估专家组高度评价，吉外“是一所有情怀、有担当、有贡献、有水平、有特色、有灵魂、有希望的学校，不愧是全国民办高校的一面旗帜”！
As students of Jilin International Studies University, you need to first know JISU’s history, aspirations and values. JISU is an entrepreneurial university and has been the witness and epitome of the rapid development of higher education in China since the reform and opening up. It has been a long journey along which we have made strenuous efforts to make it this far. Now JISU is a university with distinctive features. Adhering to serving the country's Belt and Road Initiative and the local economic as its mission, cultivating talents with applied talents as the core goal, we aspire to train talents with a great sense of patriotism and great competence in language learning. We adopt a student-centered approach in school running and aim to provide the best education. JISU is a non-profit university dedicated to serving the society. The quality of our students remains at the top among all non-public universities and colleges across China. We are the first to be renamed among all non-public universities and colleges across China. We aim to realize our dream of building a century-old world famous private university. The spirit of public welfare and lofty educational philosophy provide inexhaustible driving force for the development of JISU, which has been applauded by the Education Ministry as a beacon for all non-public universities across China.
同学们，今年是新中国成立70周年，中华民族迎来了从站起来、富起来到强起来的伟大飞跃，创造了一个又一个人类发展史上的伟大奇迹，正阔步走在中华民族伟大复兴的新征程上。青年一代有理想、有本领、有担当，国家就有前途，民族就有希望。作为新时代的大学生，你们生逢其时。大学是你们人生的黄金期和关键期，将是你们一生中最值得珍藏，难以抹去的印记。你们要把握机遇，增强紧迫感、责任感、使命感，在学习奋斗中彰显人生价值！
Dear students, this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China. The Chinese nation has ushered in a great era, creating one great miracle after another in the history of human development, embarking on a new journey of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. If the young generation has ideals, abilities and responsibilities, the nation will have a bright future. As college students in the new era, college life is the golden period in your whole life. Therefore, you should seize the opportunity, fulfill your responsibilities and demonstrate your value. Here are my hopes for you.
希望你们涵养家国情怀，励志使命担当。责任与担当是家国情怀的精髓。“位卑未敢忘忧国”“天下兴亡、匹夫有责”。爱国是本份，也是职责。热爱祖国是立身之本、成才之基。作为新时代的大学生，你们要树远大之理想，立豪迈之志向，在实现中华民族伟大复兴的进程中勇担历史重任。你们要做到志存高远，德才并重。“才者，德之次也；德者，才之帅也”。同学们要牢记,道德品质是衡量一个人综合素质的首要标准。希望同学们以德立身，树立正确的价值观，“学好外国语、做好中国人”，努力成为国家栋梁之材！
Remain patriotic and shoulder your due responsibilities. Remember that the rise and fall of a country is the concern and responsibility of everyone. Patriotism is an emotion, an idea, a spirit, and a sense of responsibility. More importantly, you should uphold high moral standards and a strong worldview. As the future and hope of our country, you should set up your ambitions, closely link your personal ideals with the future and destiny of our country, and truly shoulder the mission and responsibility entrusted by the times.
希望你们领悟学习真谛，博学成就主业。“不重学则殆，不好学则退，不善学则衰。”学习是人生的力量源泉，也是学生的首要任务。“人才有高下,知物由学”“不向前不知道路远，不学习不明白真理”。作为新时代的大学生，你们正处于人生积累阶段，要制定好学习规划，树立正确的学习观，惜时如金，孜孜以求，勤奋学习、刻苦学习，度过一个充实、有意义的大学生活。你们要秉承“会通中外、砺志敦材”的校训，博古通今、学贯中西，又博又专，争做视野开阔，基础扎实的高层次应用型人才，为未来发展积蓄能量！
Learning is not only the source of strength in life, but also the primary task of students. Be open-minded. Read extensively and enrich yourselves with knowledge about the past and present and serve as a bridge between cultures. You should set up rational learning objectives, study for the national rejuvenation and the country's prosperity, and work hard to bring happiness to people. Make a plan for your study and for your life in college. Bear in mind our school motto and strive to be application-oriented talents with great competence in foreign languages, and lay a solid foundation for your future endeavors.
希望你们勇于实践创新，不断超越自我。当前世界正面临百年未有之大变局，中国正逐步走向世界舞台中央，以互联网、人工智能、量子生物技术等为代表的新科技革命方兴未艾，对人才的要求越来越高。同学们，人的潜力是无限的，只有在不断实践中才能充分发掘出来。“纸上得来终觉浅、绝知此事要躬行”。实践出真知，创新无止境。作为新时代的大学生，你们要以追求卓越为目标，积极投身各种实践，参与各种志愿活动，不断提升语言综合运用能力、跨文化交际能力、实践创新能力和适应发展能力。希望你们敢于挑战自我，超越自我，以知促行，知行合一，练就真本领，努力成为推动社会进步的重要力量！
I hope you have the courage to practice and innovate, and constantly achieve breakthroughs. At present, the world is facing unprecedented changes. China is gradually moving towards the center of the world stage. The new technological revolution, exemplified by the Internet, Artificial Intelligence, and quantum biotechnology is putting higher demands for young people. You should actively engage in academic studies, volunteer activities and scientific research. Through making full use of high-quality practical teaching resources such as the global village, you can improve your abilities in comprehensive language use, intercultural communication, practical innovation and adaptability. While accumulating personal expertise, you should enhance your innovative and creative ability. Human beings have unlimited potential. You should strengthen practical learning, cultivate core skills and realize your dream while contributing to social progress.
