高中生英语演讲稿：My view on college entrance examination
Good evening, distinguished guests and my dear fellows:
Whenever our precious time is crammed with papers and sheets, our novelty thoughts are rejected by stereotypes and our various dreams are limited by the ‘one right way’, has the question ever occurred to you: what’s the point of all this?
And here comes the immutable and frozen answer: the college entrance examination. It is the one path, so narrow, so crowded. Yet, so they told us, it is the only entrance, to fame, to fortune – if only you can be the best.
So let’s see what the ‘best’ have actually become of.
One of my mother’s friends who is very specialized in his area has got many chances to give lectures in Beijing University, known as one of the best universities in China. And do you know what conclusion he made after so many visits? He told us that he saw laziness, he saw relief, he saw corruption. He saw the students, as if many of them have lost their motives, as if this is already the end of their studying journey. . He saw these, not from those underdogs, but from those who were once considered the best high school students, who were once referred to as college entrance examination specialists and winners!
How sad. I don’t think the examinees themselves would expect that. However, it is actually, in some ways, inevitable. Because after the painful 6 years, the students misunderstood study as an endless suffering under huge pressure due to irrationally high expectations. They might have dealt with the pressure well, but now, with the expectations almost fulfilled and the pressure gone, they began reveling to their hearts’ content. As throughout the 6 years, they’ve never learnt to actually study or to improve themselves. What they’ve learnt, instead, is exam-taking skills and problem-
solving techniques.
So if I am to give my view on college entrance examination, I’d say that what is needed is not the cancellation of the exam itself. It is a notion that one’s value doesn’t necessarily depend on scores. Only with this, can there be a dawn for us to see.
